MOOSE ON AND AROUND OUR SCHOOLS,
WHAT TO DO NOW AND WHAT SHOULD
BE DONE IN THE FUTURE
Close to 30,000 children attend
elementary school in Anchorage
every day. Some schools have
occasional visits from moose
while others see them the
majority of time during winter
months. The Alaska Moose
Federation is making strong
progress in bringing school
districts, community councils,
PTA’s, municipal, state and
federal agencies together to
mandate change in light of
growing moose occurrences on
school grounds. The problem of
aggressive moose around our city
will not be fixed with a one
time solution but will mandate
changes with solid planning and
new practices. Our moose
relocation program will address
moose that are continually on
and around school grounds.
Always keep this in mind. All
the meetings and plans put
together in the past focuses on
adults. The children are bearing
the brunt of this problem. Kids
are not as aware, as fast and as
tall as adults so these problems
are much bigger for our
children. What can you do to
help make change? Please contact
your PTA, school principal,
community council, the mayor,
your legislators and our
Governor and relay on your
support for safer schools in
light of increasing wildlife
hazards.
